The monument to Jaan Tõnisson, completed in 1999, was created by Mati Karmin and Tiit Trummal.

Jaan Tõnisson, born in 1868, was a legendary politician – Prime Minister, President and Foreign Minister - as well as the owner and chief editor of the national newspaper “Postimees.” Occupation forces imprisoned Jaan Tõnisson in 1940. The date and place of his death are unknown.
