Estonian ministry rejects restrictions on fast ferries

06.06.2006
The state does not support restrictions that Tallinn city administration has proposed for fast-speed vessels, since this would result in EEK 400 million (EUR 25 million) in losses for shipping companies and decrease the number of people coming to Tallinn by boat by an estimated 250,000 people a year. According to the Estonian Ministry of Economy and Communications, about 700,000 people who visit Tallinn each year use fast ferries mainly due to their speed. Deputy Mayor Jaanus Mutli had stated in April that fast-vessel traffic in Tallinn Bay endangers small ships, the coastline and harbour buildings.
