Italian Wine to Flow in Haapsalu

14.06.2011
Residents of the western town of Haapsalu are about to be called upon to sip Tuscan wine and nibble on fine cheeses, all in the name of culture.

From June 17 to 19 the coastal community will play host to the Italian Culture and Wine Days, an event that will introduce them to vintages by ten different wine producers, as well as provide them with live performances of Estonian and Italian music to go with it, a press release from the municipal government said.

Several public degustations will take place in the cafes and cultural centers throughout the town, with the main competition to be held Saturday afternoon at Haapsalu's seaside pavilion. Here paying participants will be asked to vote for the best Tuscany white, Tuscany red and Chianti Classico.

Other Italian products, including automobiles, will also be highlighted during the festival, which will be attended by the Italian ambassador to Estonia Rosa Maria Chicco Ferraro and Estonia's honorary consul in Florence Luigi Cecchini.

The idea for the culture and wine festival got its start in Haapsalu's sister city of Greve in Italy's Chianti-growing region.
