Sõmerpalu Manor Complex / Описание

Initially Sõmerpalu was the location of a vassal's stronghold, owned from 1544 by the Tartu Diocese Bailiff von Kursell. The stronghold was destroyed during the Livonian War (1558-1583). The crumbled fortress walls were never restored. Aided by winds and rain, time took its inexorable toll and the old manor centre became covered with grass.
In the 18th century the Sõmerpalu land was purchased by the Möller family from Saaremaa and in 1860-1878 they had a new mansion built, mainly in the Neo-Gothic style. For a long time the historicist style manor building was used as the local collective farm's office, diner and school. Now the manor building is privately owned.
