Two Estonian cities fight for cultural capital

Tallinn or Tartu – which will become European Capital of Culture? Experience shows that countries getting the honour of having a European capital of culture for the first time usually start with the capital city. Geopolitical and statistical indicators are in favour of Tallinn – access by air and sea; closeness to Helsinki and Stockholm; more concert halls, museums and universities. However, tourists have started to discover other Estonian places too, besides Tallinn. Logic, however, still says that everything begins with the capital.
