Ice-cold seas deter tourists in Northern Estonia

11.08.2006
Although the beach season is far from over, holidaymakers are no longer bathing on beaches in Northern Estonian due to the cold water there. The reason behind the cold sea is an easterly wind that has set the surface water in motion. Such a process is called upwelling, which means that the sea’s cold deep water rises to the surface. Upwelling is a rather unusual phenomenon in Estonia. Yesterday, the sea temperature in Pirita was only 7 degrees Celsius.
