Viljandi Guitar Festival 2011
The fourth Viljandi Guitar Festival will feature John Stowell (USA), Stian Westerhus (NOR), Risto Toppola (FIN), Paolo Angeli (ITA) and many Estonian guitar players.
A special project in cooperation with Tallinn Philarmonic Society and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra will give an overview of today's most exciting improvisational guitar players in Estonia: Robert Jürjendal, Mart Soo, Jaanus Nõgisto, Oleg Pissarenko, Riho Sibul, Andre Maaker, Jaak Sooäär, Paul Daniel and Ain Agan.
NPO Viljandi Guitar Festival awards the annual Tiit Paulus Young Guitar Players' Prize in order to help an outstanding young Estonian musician further his or her education in guitar playing. Last year's recipient was Laur Joamets. His trio concert will open this year's Viljandi Guitar Festival.
For the first time two Viljandi Guitar Festival concerts will also take place in Tallinn, first of which is headlined by Stian Westerhus from Norway. The second Viljandi Guitar Festival concert in Tallinn comes to life in cooperation with Tallinn Philarmonic Society.
Organizers of Viljandi Guitar festival wish to bring together guitar students from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Sweden in workshops. Jam sessions, workshop performances and the traditional Guitar Orchestra concert will take place during the festival week.
Major supporters of Viljandi Guitar Festival are the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy, Tallinn Philharmonic Society, Estonian Culture Fund and Viljandi Town Government.
For the third time it will be possible to meet the best luthiers in Estonia, admire and sample their instruments as well as get acquainted with various learning materials for improvisation and guitar playing. The Luthier Day will take place on Saturday, 17th of September from noon to 4pm in the ETMC Granary.
