Abruka tuletorn / Beskrivning

The Abruka rear lighthouse is located on the east coast of the island. The initial structure, built in 1897, was 28m high and had the form of a trellised wooden candelabrum. The beacon was built higher somewhere around World War I, which made the 36m lighthouse presumably the tallest wooden building of its time in Estonia.

The old tower was replaced by a tall and slender reinforced concrete lighthouse in 1931 (design by engineer Ferdinand Adoff, construction by Arronet & Boustedt), which was the same height as the previous beacon but only 2m wide in diameter. Good quality technical solutions for the foundations and the monolithic structure proved to be very stable when faced with the harsh stormy weather and the lighthouse with its technical equipment has preserved rather well to this day. Among the historical outbuildings the keeper’s house, cellar and the storage hut have also survived.
