SUMMER ARIA. Synthesis of the Arts 10.7-10.8.2012

20.06.2012
Pärnu Opera’s unique open-air festival SUMMER ARIA. Synthesis of the Arts takes place for the sixth time.

The opening performance, The Distant Love, comprises works for soprano and electronics: Lonh by Kaija Saariaho, Cassandra by Sohrab Uduman and White Angel by Lubawa Sydorenko, and two works for electronics by Hans-Gunter Lock. The Distant Love is a performance about longing, hopelessness and mysticism. Starring soprano Kai Kallastu; Stage Director Liis Kolle; Music Director Andrus Kallastu; visual realization by designer Liina Vedler.

At the beginning of August, the performances of the opera The Clemency of Titus (La Clemenza di Tito) form the highlights of the festival. The opera’s intrigue, which intertwines jealousy, perfidy and compassion, is conveyed by the masterful music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Vitellia, the daughter of the former emperor Vitellius, uses her admirer Sesto, the best friend of Tito, in a bitter plot to assassinate the beloved Emperor Tito, who does not return her affections. Fire and turmoil lead the story towards a surprising conclusion. The opera is performed in Italian.

This fascinating opera was first performed on 6 September 1791 in Prague, just three months before the composer’s death in December 1791. In Estonia, the opera’s only production was carried out in the Theatre of Tallinn during season 1812/1813. In 2006, a successful concert performance of the opera was given at the Estonian National Opera, with mezzo-soprano Annaliisa Pillak debuting as Sextus. She will also perform the role of Sextus in Pärnu Opera’s production. The title role will be performed by the gorgeous Finnish tenor Petri Vesa and Estonian soprano Kai Kallastu will take the stage as Vitellia. The role of Sextus’s sister, Serviglia, will be performed by Finnish soprano Ulla Paakkunainen, and the commander of the Guard is Estonian basso Kristjan Mõisnik. The Stage Director is Sven Kivisildnik, the Set Designer is Margus Tiitsmaa (Sorge). The conductor of the Pärnu Opera orchestra is Andrus Kallastu.

The festival also offers a unique possibility to enjoy the concert programmes ANIMA MEA, BACH IN PÄRNU and SUMMER ARIAS, including performances of art music from Baroque to avant-garde.

The festival’s discount tickets will be available until 1 July 2012 in Piletilevi – www.piletilevi.ee.
