In May more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, in May 2013, 264,000 foreign and domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 6% more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of domestic tourists as well as foreign tourists increased.
In May, 190,600 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments, which was 6% more than in May a year ago.
67% of foreign tourists arrived from the neighbouring countries Finland, Russia and Latvia. The number of tourists from Russia increased the most (47%) compared to May of the previous year. The number of tourists from Finland and Latvia increased 11%.
In May, there were fewer tourists from Germany, Sweden, Norway and the United Kingdom than a year ago.
71% of the foreign tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments preferred the accommodation services in Tallinn.
In May, 73,600 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments – this is over 4,600 Estonian residents more than in May 2012. Less than one fifth of accommodated domestic tourists used the services of the accommodation establishments of Tallinn and their number increased 11% compared to May of the previous year.
In May, 1,011 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 19,500 rooms and 44,100 beds were available for tourists.
The room occupancy rate was 46% and the bed occupancy rate was 36%. The room occupancy rate and the bed occupancy rate in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn were higher than the Estonian average. One third of all available beds were located in large establishments (100 or more rooms), a quarter in medium-sized establishments (30 to 99 rooms) and 41% in small establishments (up to 30 rooms).
More than a half of the tourists (14% of domestic tourists and 86% of foreign tourists) preferred to stay in large establishments. The number of tourists in small accommodation establishments (up to 30 rooms) increased 4% compared to May 2012, whereas the increase was 9% in case of accommodation establishments with 1–9 rooms.
Compared to May 2012, 9% more tourists stayed in large establishments and 4% more tourists stayed in medium-sized accommodation establishments.
The average cost of a guest night was 34 euros and remained on the same level as in May 2012. The average cost of a guest night was higher than the Estonian average only in large accommodation establishments.
