Tallinn elected as possible cultural capital
A special committee of the Estonian Ministry of Culture elected Tallinn the country’s entry for European Capital of Culture 2011 with 8 votes to 3. Minister Raivo Palmaru is likely to confirm the decision on March 29. Tallinn’s expenditures for the project in 2007–2012 would be EEK 3.8 billion (EUR 0.24 billion), a third of which will be allocated from the city budget, a third from the state budget and a third from EU funds and sponsors. A member of the commission said that Tallinn is logistically the better choice. There are more than 11,000 hotel rooms in the Estonian capital, but only 1,300 in Tartu.
