St. John's Orthodox Church, St. John's Stone And AndEye-Curing Spring In Meeksi / Vorstellung

The Apostolic Orthodox church of John the Baptist in Meeksi was built in 1953. The church construction work, just like in the case of the Obinitsa church, was carried out during Stalin's rule by members of the congregation, on their own initiative. The Meeksi church's holy day is the old Midsummer's Day - July 7th.
Opposite the church, on the bank of the Miikse Stream, is situated St. John's (sacrificial) Stone. It is said that Saint John himself once sat on it, resting his feet, and left an imprint in the stone. Even today some people believe that the stone has miraculous powers and a sick person is brought to the stone, the sore hand or foot pressed against its surface. Candles are lit at the stone on the old Midsummer's Day. Behind the sacrificial stone, on the so-called Pühamägi (Holy Mountain), is an underground cemetery. The spring water from the Miikse Stream flowing near St. John's Stone is also believed to have a healing effect.
